Hockey Cares 2022 – A Successful Oakville Exchange

I founded Hockey Cares (a project of True North Aid) in 2017, with the mission of connecting youth through a shared love of hockey. The Hockey Cares project promotes real reconciliation through a positive cultural exchange, and building lasting relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

We coordinate an exchange with Oakville and Attawapiskat bantam hockey teams and allow each group to visit the other in their home town. Attawapiskat youth travel to Oakville in July, and the Oakville youth fly up to Attawapiskat in November to learn from their new friends, play hockey, and experience a new culture.

We had to pause Hockey Cares due to COVID-19, but on June 30, 2022 we were so thrilled to welcome Attawapiskat youth to kick off the Oakville portion of this year’s Hockey Cares exchange.

We invite you to visit the Hockey Cares Facebook page to see all the photos from the Oakville part of the exchange.

Hockey Cares is Back!
Hockey Cares is back! Due to the global pandemic, we haven’t been able to do our hockey exchange since 2019. However, we are so thrilled to be planning an exchange this year!

I founded Hockey Cares, a project of True North Aid, with the mission of connecting youth through a shared love of hockey. Starting in 2017, the Hockey Cares team and I have coordinated an exchange with Oakville and Attawapiskat bantam hockey teams. Attawapiskat youth travel to Oakville in July, and the Oakville youth fly up to Attawapiskat in November to learn from their new friends, play hockey, and experience a new culture.

Recently Elite Level Hockey did a story on Hockey Cares. Here are some quotes from a recent article:

“I agree, I wasn’t sure about the program before I went,” Leah said. “As you go through the program — especially when they came here — I thought it was really, cool. It was one of the highlights...

Hockey Cares Recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - September 30, 2021

September 30th, 2021, is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

It is a day to reflect and recognize the tragic history and ongoing impact of residential schools on Canada's Indigenous people and to make sure it is never forgotten.

Hockey Cares would like to acknowledge the Elders who share their experiences while continuing to educate our nation towards Truth and Reconciliation.

Please donate to Hockey Cares, a reconciliation project under True North Aid.

By playing together we learn from each other. Thank you for your support.

Hockey Cares was founded by Sue Heddle in 2017. It is a project of True North Aid, with the mission of connecting youth through a shared love of hockey.

In 2017, Sue Heddle founded Hockey Cares as a way to bring Indigenous youth and Non-Indigenous youth together. Through hockey as a shared passion, participating youth learn about each other as individual people, their cultures, realities of life and get a chance to listen to one another’s personal stories.

2020 marks the fourth time Hockey Cares will enable this life changing opportunity for young people and we want to make sure that everyone who may be interested gets a chance to learn more about how they can participate, volunteer or donate to this amazing initiative.
